With front row seats to one of the most stunning views of the Sussex coast, we are constantly reminded how precious our beautiful environment is. So, here at Billy’s, we are doing our bit to protect it.
We have started our own war on plastics – long before the Government made its big announcement to eliminate all avoidable plastic waste within 25 years. Firstly, since autumn last year, we have been using paper not plastic straws. You’d have had to be a hermit crab not to have seen the shocking images of a turtle having a plastic straw removed from its nostril. According to the Marine Conservation Society, plastic straws are among the top 10 items found in beach clean-ups. Although we avoid giving them out where ever possible, during the summer months we get through around 4,000 straws – but they will all now be paper.
And recently if you are popping in for a coffee and bring your own refillable mug, we will reward you with 20p off the price. Soon you will be able to buy your own `Billy’s on the Beach’ keep cup to take away one of our delicious hot drinks. If you are a tea drinker, then you’ll be glad to hear we have switched our brew to a fresh leaf in pyramid-shaped biodegradable bags.
We have even roped in our lovely local suppliers to help us. For example, our coffee comes from Edgcumbes of Arundel, who now supply our beans in reusable containers which they refill. It beats storing it in throwaway plastic drums or cardboard.
So next time you are Billy’s, hand us your refillable mug and enjoy a warming eco-friendly drink while looking out to sea from beautiful Bracklesham Beach.
